Available on all platforms as a way to scan documents and integrate with Microsoft productivity suite applications, Office Lens has been constantly updated for Android and iOS, offering new features and usability improvements.
However, one of the versions that has been “forgotten” since then was made available within the Microsoft Store itself, which culminated this week with the permanent deactivation of Office Lens in its official store, making it only available for Android now or iOS.
Quite possibly, this closure is related above all to the death of Windows Phone / Windows Mobile, thus making the application lose its meaning thanks to the absence of a mobile platform that integrates with the PC, something that ended up in the hands of Android and iOS.
On the official Office Lens for Windows support page, you can find the following warning:
Important: Certain cloud-based services in Office Lens for Windows, such as saving your photos to OneDrive, OneNote, Word, PowerPoint or PDF, will be unavailable after December 31, 2020. You can continue to use other features of the application as installed on your device. In addition, Office Lens for Windows 10 will no longer be available for download from the Microsoft Store as of January 1, 2021. To continue enjoying all the features of Office Lens, we recommend downloading and using the latest version of Office Lens for iOS or Office Lens for Android on your mobile device.
It is obviously worth emphasizing that this removal is only related to the store for Windows, with availability on Android (which is even used on the Surface Duo) and iOS, with updates being maintained.
