Apple’s AirPower is officially dead

Apple has officially announced that they are going to cancel its AirPower wireless charging mat project. The company said on Friday that AirPower has an inability to achieve high standards and noted it won’t be releasing the much-anticipated product.

Airpower was a wireless charging mat which simultaneously charges multiple devices up to 3 in Apple case. Since being announced in September 2017, Airpower was one of Apple’s most-awaited product for all Apple users. The company also promised that the oval wireless charging pad would arrive sometime in 2018 but later on, they again pushed out that deadline.

Dan Riccio said that “After much effort, we’ve put on it but we’ve concluded that AirPower will not achieve our high standards, and we have to cancel the project“. Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering said that “We apologize to the customers who were looking forward to this Apple product. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to pushing the wireless experience forward.”

AirPower’s cancellation is a black eye for Apple. It always tends to announce products only when they’re ready to ship, which also made AirPower’s delays notable. But it is one of the biggest missteps which Apple made in recent years. It’s Mac Pro computer, popular with creative professionals for pro-level-graphics which can output up to 4000 display and its 6 thunderbolts two ports plus HDMI but it also has gone without a major update since 2013. The product’s redesign has faced multiple delays but it is still expected in 2019 time isn’t confirmed yet. Apple also has had various bugs in its iOS software, including an autocorrect bug with iOS 8.0.1 and a Group faces time Problem with iOS 12.1.

Some Apple watchers said it was a smart move for Apple that they haven’t released an inferior product.

“Some people said that Apple may have saved iPhone users and its own reputation by not to launch a poorly working product. Imagine your disappointment and anger if you bought AirPower and it never functioned smoothly then what will you do. AirPower could have been costly also. Apple never announced the price of Airpower but a wireless charging case for the new generation of AirPods costs more than $80.

Others said If AirPower was overheating then what will you do. So that Apple could not bring it to market. Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said. “Considering others have multi-device mats, Apple could have brought to market a different design, but it would have been even more disappointed thing.”

AirPower was expected to work with Apple’s newer iPhones, the Apple Watch and the new wireless-charging AirPods case.  It would charge multiple devices at the same time 3 devices in Apple case, something available in other charging mats like Samsung’s Wireless. Apple’s new AirPods even come with Information on the packaging about working with AirPower.  It was supposed to be a giant leap forward for wireless charging as a whole. Apple already gave wireless charging a boon when they added the feature to the iPhone and iPhone X. Apple’s support behind the Qi standard effectively shuttered the competition and caused the industry to consolidate behind a single protocol.

But AirPower was more than just wireless charging. It aims to help devices communicate with each other to manage power consumption. Apple’s AirPower demo in September 2017 showed that iPhone screen tracking all of the devices on the charger by different colors of light and displaying their battery status. At the time, it wasn’t clear if the product would work with non-Apple devices. It also was not clear that if the technology had been built into a current iPhone as well as the AirPower pad.

In 2016 when Apple ditched its headphone jack from iPhone7, at that time it was said that it viewed the future as wireless.  Phil Schiller head of marketing said the move took “courage” Since then, Apple has rolled out iPhones that support wireless charging, and its newly updated AirPods have an optional wireless charging case. AirPower was the first Apple-designed wireless charging technology. But its wireless devices all work with third-party chargers so that Apple officially announce it dead.
