Apple may be about to break a partnership with Samsung that would lead the Cupertino giant to buy its screens with another company. So far nothing very surprising as suppliers come and go. The quirkiness, however, is something that can leave Trump standing up.
Apple would be negotiating with Chinese BOE to produce screens for the iPhones of 2020. This is because recently Japan tightened the trade rules valid for South Korea, making licensing compulsory whenever specific semiconductors, hydrogen fluoride, and other articles essential for the production of OLED screens were ordered there. This will mean a new bureaucracy of up to 90 days with each new shipment ordered by Samsung.
One problem with this possible change of home is that Apple could lose important technologies for the 2020 generation of its devices.
Samsung already works on an OLED panel model that inlays the touchpad. It is still necessary to insert an additional movie for the touch to work. This innovation would allow lighter and finer screens.
BOE, on the other hand, says it is already studying the engineering behind this new generation of displays and would have promised an exclusive product line for iPhones at its facilities.
Huawei’s supplier, the BOE has already delivered panels for Apple, but for the production of iPods and MacBooks.
