Instagram and Snapchat may encourage plastic surgery in women, study says

InstagramThe filters used in social networks are capable of influencing women to perform plastic surgeries. At least, says a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

The survey – done with 252 white women with an average age of 25 years – found that the image modification features present on Instagram and Snapchat, plus the use of Tinder and YouTube, would make people quieter about doing an aesthetic procedure in real life.

According to Renee Engeln, a psychology professor at Northwestern University, who was just comparing models and other personalities, the image of the person with the filters of social networks serves as a parameter.

“It’s not enough to compare yourself to these improved model images, but now you have this daily comparison of your real self with that false self, intentional or not, that you present in social media.”

The professional still warns that the problem of losing perspective about how the person really is can be something serious.

While networks can boost self-esteem or lower it in users, others are leaving social media for distinct reasons: poorly implemented news, data theft, and Fake News.
